My father passed away on the night of Nov 4th. He had been fighting lung cancer but it was still very unexpected that he would take such a rapid turn for the worse so quickly. Just the week before he had been saying that he was fine, though his voice on the phone sounded a little tired. Having fought and beat previous cancers we had planned a week-long visit over Thanksgiving, but when I received a call from one of my cousin's that his condition had taken a quick turn for the worse we booked a quick flight to Alabama to see him.
He died at 7pm on the night of Nov 4th while we were with him, without pain or suffering, and was buried on Nov 6th in accordance with his wish not to 'drag it out' or 'make a big fuss'. With the handling of his burial arrangements and his estate I was not able to notify everyone I might have liked to of his passing in a timely manner. However now that we are finally back in Houston I did want to take a moment to recognize his passing here.
Born in the 1920's and having lived through the Great Depression he was from a very different generation than the parents of most of my peers and friends growing up...more the age of their grandparents than parents. However I will be forever thankful for that and the "old fashioned" ideals and principles that he imparted to me.
Rest in Peace Dad.
